Transmetropolitan #23 arrives in July 1999 with a cover by Geof Darrow that's a feast of furious detail — Spider Jerusalem, shirtless and cigarette-lit, clutching a liquor bottle and wearing his signature spider tattoo and tinted glasses, looms in the foreground while a densely packed crowd of gloriously bizarre City dwellers swirls behind him, topped off by a levitating cat tumbling through the chaos above. Warren Ellis and Darick Robertson's series was already one of Vertigo's sharpest satirical voices, and this "New Boss" chapter hints at the City's relentless, wonderful weirdness in full swing.
