In "Lokkemat i Canyon-passet," schoolteacher John Tane is ambushed by the Drygulch Gang and tied to a slingshot-tree, rigged to launch him to his death unless the rope is cut in time. With no help in sight, he uses his eyeglasses to focus sunlight and burn through the cord, sending him tumbling into a rushing river.
