Unaware of her scheme, he follows her on a wild ride that tests his skills—saving her from a cliff, evading Sioux arrows, leaping a chasm, and swimming a river—only to discover there’s no one to witness it. Later, posing as John Tane, the schoolmaster she dismisses, he’s forced to reveal himself when she chooses him as her escort after he defends the children from robbers.
