"The Trail of Doom" features Tom Mix and Ratty investigating a gold mine swindle orchestrated by Moss B. Grenfell, who attempts to murder his partner Fightin' Forbes to cover up their scheme; Forbes and Mix ultimately expose the con and apprehend Grenfell. "Tumbleweed Jr. in Papoose Sitter" is a humorous backup story in which the young Native American character attempts to catch a rabbit while babysitting a papoose, leading to comedic mishaps involving a coyote. The issue also includes a "Little Arrow" story depicting the character's misadventures at Small Corn's Indian Restaurant, where he causes property damage while attempting various jobs.
Tom Mix and Sheriff Mike Shaw raid Shuffles' crooked casino and run the gambler out of town—but Shuffles swears vengeance and puts out a deadly contract on Mix. When a new neighbor, Miss Lambert, arrives at her ranch and finds it boarded up, she turns to Tom for help, unknowingly walking straight into Shuffles' trap. Now Tom faces a twisted game where Shuffles uses playing cards to decide his fate, and the draw of the Ace of Spades seals a grim sentence.
Young Tumbleweed Jr. sneaks away from his babysitting duties to hunt rabbits, only to return to chaos when a wolf threatens the sleeping papoose he was supposed to protect. In a desperate scramble to save Little Feather, Tumbleweed Jr. discovers that heroism sometimes comes when you least expect it—and that the outcome isn't always what you fear.
Tom Mix comes to the aid of Chief Big Bear after stumbling upon him being attacked by renegade braves, but when he returns with Doc Greene, discovers the chief has mysteriously vanished—leaving behind only cryptic Indian symbols that tell a hidden story. Following a trail of carefully placed marks through desert and mountain, Tom must decipher Big Bear's desperate messages to track down his friend before it's too late.
A young Indian boy wanders into unfamiliar territory and stops at a farmhouse seeking directions back to the reservation, only to deliver a twist on who's actually lost. This quick-witted Western humor piece plays with expectations in true frontier fashion.
Tom Mix and his horse Tony board a river boat heading downriver, but their voyage takes a dangerous turn when the notorious River Rogues—a band of river pirates—attack with a blockade and rob the vessel. When Tom discovers a clue pointing to their next target, the steamboat John L. Richards, he races against time to reach the ship before the outlaws strike again.
When a hungry Big Bow tries to paint pictures of food to satisfy his stomach, Little Arrow convinces him they should scheme their way into jobs at Small Corn's Indian Restaurant—first by tricking the current worker, Crow Foot, out of showing up, then by talking their way into positions as bus boys. But as Big Bow and Little Arrow work to build up their appetites through cleaning floors, tables, and dishes, their plan to earn a free meal keeps getting delayed—and when it finally seems within reach, one catastrophic accident sends them fleeing empty-handed and straight into the very person they've been avoiding all day.
Tom Mix is hired to re-enact a historic Pony Express ride, but a pair of quick-thinking thieves use the distraction to rob a jewelry store—and hide their stolen diamond in Tom's saddle. When the crooks catch up to Tom on the trail and leave him bound and seemingly helpless, he'll need all his resourcefulness to break free and track them down before they escape the territory for good.
