There's something delightfully self-referential about this 1966 Charlton cover: Timmy the Timid Ghost sits nervously against a gnarled tree beneath a full moon, sweating and exclaiming "Gosh… this is SCARY!" — while reading a copy of Ghostly Tales, surrounded by eerie spectral figures lurking in the shadows behind him. It's a wonderfully gentle joke, a little ghost too frightened even of ghost comics, rendered with charm by cover artists Jon D'Agostino and Rocco "Rocke" Mastroserio. At just 12 cents, this September issue captures everything lovable about Timmy's endearingly anxious personality.
