Tim Holt faces off against outlaw war-makers led by a chief named Killer in a range conflict where Tim and his allies defend the ranch. After defeating the outlaws, Tim encounters trouble at the Stirrup Stage Company when a holdup occurs on a stagecoach carrying Jim Harper's daughter, requiring Tim to intervene with his six-gun. Tim later adopts a black wolf he names Thunder, which he trains and proves loyal despite initial suspicions about the animal's true nature, taking the wolf with him on his adventures to Red Mesa.

What unfolds is a tense night of infiltration and sabotage that will determine whether the wagon train reaches safety.

When the ruthless outlaw Jim Harper is gunned down near Bullet, Sheriff Gates faces an impossible case—the local ranchers had motive, but no one will talk. Tim Holt and his partner Chito join the hunt, and with unexpected help from a humble Indian shaman's statue, they uncover a darker truth: Harper's past has come back to claim not just his life, but his daughter Ellie and the fortune he'd stolen years before. As killers close in on the ranch and a midnight chase leads straight to the Prairie Queen Saloon, Tim devises an ingenious test to expose the murderers hiding in plain sight.

When Tim Holt rescues a black wolf-dog called Thunder from a mountain lion, he brings the wild animal back to the T Bar H ranch despite his partner's warnings that the creature's feral nature will eventually win out. Thunder's answer comes when he tracks Tim down to warn him of a deadly trap waiting on the trail ahead.
