About this Issue

ThunderCats: Lost #5 is the arc-closing chapter of the first story arc in Dynamite's ThunderCats: Lost spin-off series — the issue that finally resolves the central mystery of Commander Bengali's fate, a narrative thread that had been driving the entire five-issue run since issue #1. By placing Bengali, Pumyra, and Lynx-O — characters who debuted in later seasons of the original 1985 animated series and who rarely received sustained spotlight treatment — at the center of their own gritty, self-contained story, the series represents a meaningful expansion of ThunderCats lore beyond the franchise's most familiar faces. The conclusion set up by this issue proved consequential beyond the arc itself: the Lost team's story carried directly into the subsequent ThunderCats: Lost in Time series and eventually into the larger ThunderCats × SilverHawks crossover event, confirming the Lost cast as permanent fixtures in Dynamite's growing 'Thunderverse.' As the finale of a story explicitly designed to explore a darker, morally complex corner of Third Earth, issue #5 marks the moment this secondary squad earned narrative standing equal to the main ThunderCats title.

History

ThunderCats: Lost grew directly out of writer Ed Brisson and artist Rapha Lobosco's well-received ThunderCats: Apex one-shot, which editor Nate Cosby used as the creative springboard for a full monthly series launching in March 2025. The series was conceived as a deliberate tonal counterpart to the flagship ThunderCats title by Declan Shalvey and Drew Moss — a grittier, war-comic-inflected book centered on the franchise's secondary characters. Lobosco was involved in the character design work for the series' two new original characters, Neko and Ligon, whose designs were revealed publicly in December 2024 alongside the initial announcement. Issue #5's on-sale date of August 20, 2025 closed out the arc on a schedule that had seen at least one earlier issue in the run shifted due to industry-wide spring 2025 distribution delays.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Writer: Ed Brisson; Interior Artist: Rapha Lobosco; Editor: Nate Cosby; Letterer: Jeff Eckleberry; Colorist: Roshan Kurichiyanil.
  • Issue #5 is the concluding chapter of the first story arc of ThunderCats: Lost, closing out the central mystery of Commander Bengali's survival after he was apparently killed in combat at the very beginning of the squad's mission.
  • The series re-introduced three ThunderCats characters — Bengali, Pumyra, and Lynx-O — who originally debuted in the animated TV movie ThunderCats Ho! and were added in later seasons of the 1980s cartoon, making them substantially less well-known than the original core cast.
  • ThunderCats: Lost #1 introduced two brand-new ThunderCats characters, Neko (a snow leopard warrior) and Ligon (a liger), created by Brisson and Lobosco specifically for this series; these characters carry forward into subsequent storylines including the ThunderCats × SilverHawks crossover.
  • The series also introduced new villains original to the Dynamite continuity, including Captain Shiner and the mercenary Scorpius (who debuted in issue #2), expanding the franchise's roster of antagonists beyond the classic Mumm-Ra/Mutants framework.
  • Cover artists for issue #5 include Declan Shalvey, Clayton Henry, Meghan Hetrick, Marco Failla, Jae Lee & June Chung, and Rapha Lobosco himself, continuing the multi-cover format used across all titles in Dynamite's ThunderCats line.
  • The Lost team's story continued beyond this arc into ThunderCats: Lost in Time (written by Brisson with art by Chris Campana), in which the cast is sent to a dystopian 'Sixth Earth,' and later into the ThunderCats × SilverHawks: ThunderHawks miniseries.
  • Issue #5 went on sale August 20, 2025, with Diamond product code MAY250168 and Lunar code 0725DE879 for Cover A (by Declan Shalvey).
