In that past encounter, Claudus discloses that Third Earth was originally used as a penal colony for thousands of exiled Mutants, a revelation that reframes the entire stakes of the ThunderCats' settlement there and plants a moral weight on Lion-O's legacy. The issue also introduces an unnamed time-traveling adversary who pursues both Tygra and Claudus across eras, expanding the series' science-fiction register well beyond the animated source material. As the penultimate chapter of the main ten-issue run, it sets up the conflicts that the subsequent ThunderCats crossover event and spin-offs would carry forward.

Dynamite Entertainment announced the series at New York Comic Con in October 2023 as the flagship title of a new licensing partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products, with writer Declan Shalvey, artist Drew Moss, and letterer Jeff Eckleberry forming the core creative team. Editor Nate Cosby framed the book from the outset as a mystery-driven sci-fi survival story rather than a straightforward adaptation of the cartoon, and Shalvey's stated intent — to push deeper into the science-fiction underpinnings of the mythology — is most fully realized in issue #8's time-travel structure. The series launched in February 2024 and ran for ten issues before transitioning into a larger crossover event, with #8 arriving in September 2024 as the second arc neared its conclusion.
