About this Issue

ThunderCats #7 (August 2024) is a character-spotlight chapter in Dynamite's commercially successful reboot series — the first ongoing ThunderCats comic in decades — that shifts the storytelling focus squarely onto WilyKit and WilyKat, giving the Thunderkittens a depth of agency rarely afforded them in prior adaptations. By placing the young twins at the center of a solo adventure that brings them face-to-face with Mumm-Ra, writer Declan Shalvey demonstrates the series' commitment to developing its full ensemble rather than leaning entirely on Lion-O. The issue functions as a pivotal bridge in the second story arc, planting a discovery that escalates the existential stakes for the Thunderian survivors on Third Earth, and directly sets the stage for the introduction of the new character Apex in issue #8.

History

Dynamite Entertainment announced the ThunderCats ongoing series at New York Comic Con 2023, with the creative team of writer Declan Shalvey, artist Drew Moss, and letterer Jeff Eckleberry. The series launched in February 2024 under a licensing arrangement with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products and quickly became one of Dynamite's highest-profile titles. Issue #7, carrying the story title 'Wounds,' arrived on August 21, 2024, as the second chapter of the series' second story arc — the same arc that had debuted the Thundertank in issue #6. Editor Nate Cosby shepherded the book, and the franchise's momentum by this point had already spawned the spin-off ThunderCats: Cheetara by Soo Lee and Domenico Carbone.

  • Written by Declan Shalvey; art by Drew Moss; published by Dynamite Entertainment; on-sale date August 21, 2024.
  • The plot centers on WilyKit and WilyKat defying Lion-O's compound rules to explore Third Earth on their own, where they encounter Mumm-Ra and uncover a secret with potentially devastating consequences for the Thunderian survivors.
  • No new character first appearances are recorded for this specific issue; Key Collector Comics lists no dedicated key designation for #7 (notable firsts in the run include Calica in #2 and Apex in #8).
  • Cover A is by David Nakayama; additional covers by Lucio Parrillo, Declan Shalvey, Jae Lee & June Chung, Ivan Tao, and Manix, plus multiple retailer-incentive variants including a WilyKit Action Figure cover and homage covers to the original Star/Marvel ThunderCats #1 by Ken Haeser.
  • The series of which it is a part was announced at NYCC 2023 with a creative team of Shalvey, Moss, and letterer Jeff Eckleberry; editor Nate Cosby oversaw production.
  • The Dynamite ThunderCats series grew into a 'ThunderVerse,' spawning ThunderCats: Cheetara (Soo Lee/Domenico Carbone), a SilverHawks series (Ed Brisson/George Kambadais), and a subsequent crossover event — all traceable back to the momentum built across the run that #7 is part of.
