About this Issue

ThunderCats #18 is the third chapter of the fourth story arc of Dynamite's acclaimed ongoing series — the arc that formally integrated the Knights of Thundera into the series' expanding mythology. The issue raises the dramatic stakes within the ThunderCats' own ranks by spotlighting a ThunderDuel demanded by Tygra, demonstrating writer Declan Shalvey's consistent commitment to character-driven conflict rather than purely external threat. It continues the series' pattern of deepening Thunderian lore with wholly new constructs — the Knights, Thundore armor, new individual weapons — that have no direct precedent in the original 1985 animated series. As part of a run whose first issue exceeded 180,000 copies in initial orders and generated multiple printings, every subsequent chapter of the ongoing carries the weight of being part of the most commercially and critically successful ThunderCats comics revival in the franchise's history.

History

The Dynamite ThunderCats ongoing was announced at New York Comic Con 2023 as a partnership between Dynamite Entertainment and Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products. The creative team of writer Declan Shalvey, artist Drew Moss, and letterer Jeff Eckleberry was announced from the outset, with Shalvey also serving as a cover artist throughout the run. Issue #16 launched the Knights of Thundera story arc — the fourth of the series — with Shalvey publicly describing the Knights as the next evolution of a mythos he and Moss had been building since issue #1. ThunderCats #18 is the third installment of that arc, continuing the same unbroken creative team.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Published by Dynamite Entertainment; on sale September 10, 2025; 32 pages, full color, rated Teen.
  • Written by Declan Shalvey; interior art by Drew Moss — the same creative team that has helmed every issue of the series since its February 2024 launch.
  • Issue #18 is the third chapter of the fourth story arc, which introduced the Knights of Thundera as a new proactive security force created by Cheetara, equipped with Thundore armor and individually designed swords.
  • The Knights of Thundera made their first appearance in ThunderCats #16 (on sale July 16, 2025); by issue #18 they have already carried out their first mission — a raid on the Mu'Tants — whose fallout drives this issue's central conflict.
  • The main story engine of issue #18 is a ThunderDuel: Tygra demands formal satisfaction from a newcomer within the Knights who has crossed a line, escalating internal faction tensions.
  • Cover F features Drew Moss's ongoing 'action figure package' motif — specifically a Panthro Knights of Thundera Armor action figure — a cover variant concept Moss has run throughout the series as an homage to the original 1985 Ljn toy line.
  • Cover artists for issue #18 include Lucio Parrillo (Cover A), Declan Shalvey (Cover B), Jae Lee & June Chung (Cover C), Drew Moss (Cover D), and Manix Abrera (Cover E), with multiple foil and virgin incentive variants.
  • The Dynamite ThunderCats line expanded to include spin-off series ThunderCats: Cheetara (Soo Lee / Domenico Carbone), ThunderCats: Apex (Ed Brisson / Rapha Lobosco), and SilverHawks (Ed Brisson / George Kambadais), all part of a shared 'ThunderVerse.'
