The series launched as part of the October 2012 Marvel NOW! initiative under Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso, with Lauren Sankovitch serving as editor on the title. Jason Aaron and Esad Ribić conceived the run as a full-scale reinvention of Thor's solo title, structuring their opening story across three simultaneous timelines — Viking-era young Thor, present-day Avenger Thor, and a far-future King Thor — a structural ambition that was largely unprecedented for a Thor ongoing. Ribić provided painted-style interiors for the majority of the run, though Butch Guice and Tom Palmer handled the art for issue #6 (Gorr's origin); by issue #11 Ribić had returned to close the arc, with Ive Svorcina on colors and Joe Sabino on letters. The complete God Butcher/Godbomb saga (issues #1–11) was later repackaged in 2022 as Thor: The Saga of Gorr the God Butcher to capitalize on the character's MCU debut.
