The Uncanny X-Men #366
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeUncanny X-Men #366 serves as the Uncanny side's opening chapter of the 1999 'Magneto War' crossover — the story that finally answered the years-long question of who, exactly, Joseph was and where he came from. The issue delivers the first appearance of Astra, a mutant teleporter retroactively established as the original founding member of Magneto's Brotherhood whom he had scorned and driven away before the team ever went public — a retcon that simultaneously explained Joseph's existence and deepened the history of one of Marvel's most storied villain groups. By having Magneto dispatch his robot Ferris to the United Nations with an ultimatum for a mutant homeland under threat of electromagnetic annihilation, the story places the X-Men's most enduring geopolitical argument — mutant rights versus human sovereignty — at the center of a genuine global-stakes thriller, setting the stage for Joseph's sacrifice and Magneto's reclamation of Genosha.

The issue was written by Alan Davis (plot) and Fabian Nicieza (script), with pencils by Leinil Francis Yu and inks by John Livesay, Tim Townsend, and Edgar Tadeo — a production arrangement reflecting the late-1990s Marvel practice of splitting plotting and scripting duties across collaborators. Davis had just taken over as the book's plotter, and 'Magneto War' was the very first story arc of his run, kicking off a tightly coordinated crossover between Uncanny X-Men and the companion X-Men vol. 2 title under editor Mark Powers and editor-in-chief Bob Harras. The cover was provided by Brandon Peterson, who was not the interior penciler — a common separation of duties on high-profile X-titles of the era.
Trivia · 8 facts
- First appearance of Astra (the mutant teleporter), created by Alan Davis, Fabian Nicieza, and Leinil Francis Yu; she is retroactively revealed to be the original founding member of Magneto's Brotherhood of Evil Mutants who left before the team's public debut.
- First appearance of Acolyte Vindaloo (Venkat Katragadda), also debuting in this issue among the Acolytes roster.
- Story title: 'The Shot Heard Round the World (The Magneto War Part One)'; the issue is the third chapter in the six-part Magneto War reading order.
- This issue reveals, through Sabra's investigation, that Joseph is a clone of Magneto — not a de-aged, amnesiac original — resolving a mystery that had persisted since Joseph's debut in Uncanny X-Men #327 (December 1995).
- Magneto sends the robotic emissary Ferris to the United Nations to demand a sovereign mutant haven on Earth, threatening to tear apart the electromagnetic spectrum if his terms are not met — directly echoing his action in Uncanny X-Men #304 during the 'Fatal Attractions' crossover.
- The creative team is Alan Davis (plot), Fabian Nicieza (script), and Leinil Francis Yu (pencils), with a cover by Brandon Peterson; editors were Mark Powers and Bob Harras.
- There is a notable art error in the issue: a character is drawn as Javitz but identified in dialogue as Kamal; writer Fabian Nicieza later confirmed it was intended to be Kamal.
- The issue and its Magneto War arc were collected in a 2018 Marvel trade paperback (X-Men: The Magneto War) and was reprinted in Italy as Gli Incredibili X-Men #112 (October 1999).
