Written by Chris Claremont and pencilled by John Romita Jr. (with inks by Bob Wiacek), issue #176 arrived as part of the Claremont/Romita Jr. collaborative run that had taken over from Paul Smith beginning with #175. The issue falls under Marvel's 'Assistant Editor's Month' banner — edited by Louise Simonson with Eliot R. Brown as assistant editor under editor-in-chief Jim Shooter — a line-wide event in which the senior editors were nominally 'away,' resulting in behind-the-scenes production material appearing on the letters page, including a Jim Shooter memo about the cover and a photo of Simonson's desk. The cover itself required an internal debate: editors initially wanted Cyclops blasting the squid rather than the X-Men logo, and an alternate version was drawn before the original composition was ultimately retained.
