It features the iconic tale of Jean Grey's transformation into the Dark Phoenix, a cosmic entity of immense power, and the X-Men's desperate struggle to save her from herself and the Shi'ar Empire. Written by Chris Claremont with art by John Byrne, this edition reprints the key issues from the original 1980 storyline that remains a cornerstone of X-Men lore.
"God Spare the Child..." is a pivotal chapter in the X-Men saga, featuring a landmark confrontation on the Blue Area of the Moon as Lilandra’s Imperial Guard and the X-Men clash over Jean Grey’s fate. Written by John Byrne and Chris Claremont, with art by Byrne and inks by Terry Austin, this emotionally charged story sees Jean sacrifice herself to contain the Phoenix Force once more—her final act of defiance against a power that has shaped her destiny. The cover, penciled by Byrne and inked by Austin, captures the weight of that moment in striking detail.

Lilandra transports the X-Men to her base so that Phoenix can be killed for her crime of wiping out an entire star system. Xavier explains that the Phoenix Force has been purged from Jean and demands the right to trial by combat when his captors refuse to listen. The X-Men and the Imperial Guard fight on the Blue Area of the Moon to determine Jean's fate. During the battle, Dark Phoenix manifests herself once again and Jean sacrifices herself rather than let the Phoenix loose on the universe.
