“A Child's Laughter”

This tie-in to the DC-wide Joker: Last Laugh crossover event of 2001 delivers one of the more quietly unsettling covers of the run, painted by Bill Sienkiewicz. A small girl in Superman pajamas sits huddled on the floor, wide-eyed and frightened, while the leering face of the Joker repeats across a bank of surrounding screens, filling every corner of the image with his grinning menace. The contrast between that tiny, vulnerable child and the overwhelming wall of chaos around her makes the title "Mommy Dearest!" land with real weight, and sets up what looks to be a deeply personal story from writer Jay Faerber and artist Peter Grau.
