“Paws & Fast-Forward”

DiVito and Villari's cover for this 2006 Marvel series captures Ben Grimm in an unexpectedly tender light — the rocky, orange-hued Thing lying prone while two cheerful kids perch atop his massive head, sharing a dripping ice cream cone that's already making a mess of his face. It's a disarmingly sweet image that speaks to the big-hearted side of Marvel's most lovable tough guy. Dan Slott's run on The Thing had a gift for balancing warmth and humor, and this cover delivers both in spades.
