The Texan #13
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeThis issue contains at least two stories. "Doublecross at Devil's Den" features the Texan confronting outlaws and violence in a desert setting. "Curse of the Thunder God" tells of the Peralta Brothers' gold strike in Mexican mountains near Phoenix, where they unknowingly violate Apache sacred grounds, leading to an avenging Apache attack; the story involves a character named Ramon and references to a hidden mine and murdered prospectors. A third story involving a cattle broker named Barlow and dealings with fugitives from Texas is also present in the issue.
When Hawk Knife's chief is mysteriously kidnapped by warriors claiming to serve Crazy Horse, he must journey into the war chief's own camp—armed with nothing but courage, a hidden secret, and a daring plan—to free the captive and prevent a devastating conflict that could destroy his village. With treachery lurking both at home and in enemy territory, Hawk Knife draws on every ounce of skill and cunning to navigate the perilous northern plains and expose Crazy Horse's scheme before the drums call the braves to war.
Ramon Peralta's map leads two prospectors to a fortune in gold hidden in the Superstition Mountains—sacred ground the Apaches have cursed—but when Jacob Waltz arrives and claims the strike for himself, he sets in motion a chain of violence and dread that haunts everyone who seeks the riches. Years later, even death cannot release the old prospector from the Thunder God's grip, and his widow's desperate attempt to reclaim the mine only proves how completely the curse has erased its secrets.
In "Doublecross at Devil's Den," gunfighter Sante Fe Norton takes on a dangerous mission to rid Devil's Den of a ruthless outlaw gang, posing as the outlaw Chad Kenny. With the help of the unlikely deputy Willie Budge, Norton infiltrates the canyon, facing off against the gang's leaders—Hoxey, Pete, Jess, and Faro—in a tense game of deception and survival.
When Terry and the Bar-O outfit push their cattle herd north along the Chisholm Trail toward Kansas, trouble dogs their every step—rustlers and raiders are hitting nearby outfits, and the boss, Snow-shoe Tucker, warns them to stay vigilant. On their last night before reaching Abilene, Terry spots suspicious riders creeping toward the bedded herd and a firefight erupts on the dark prairie, leaving him with more questions than answers about who's really behind the raids. Now Snow-shoe wants Terry to scout Abilene ahead of the drive, where answers—and danger—surely await.
Snowshoe and Terry arrive in the rough-and-tumble cattle town of Abilene to deliver the Bar-O herd, but Terry's suspicions are immediately raised when he recognizes the voice of a smooth-talking cattle broker named Barlow—and later, Deputy Sheriff Morgan Hapes—as men he heard with rustlers the night before. As Terry investigates in secret, he discovers a troubling web of deception in a town where the law itself may be corrupt, and a chance encounter with Sue Leonard and her dying father only deepens his resolve to uncover the truth.
