The story centers on a confrontation involving a warrior named Black Dog, who leads a war party against rival tribes and stakes his life on the outcome to gain chieftain status. Black Dog kills two braves to claim scalps for his belt, violating tribal rules, and later faces a supernatural challenge from a devil cat and a wounded puma in the wilderness. The narrative concludes with Black Dog dying in a moment of terror while facing the beast, as the remaining steers and warriors struggle with their harsh circumstances on the plains during a time when buffalo and Indian dominance have faded.
