David Liss and Colton Worley's modern reinvention of the pulp avenger reaches its fourth chapter, with a Tim Bradstreet cover that perfectly captures the Shadow's menace — a looming dark figure in hat and cape, red scarf blazing against near-monochrome tones, Tommy gun raised and aimed straight at the viewer. The fragmented, shattered geometric shapes bursting behind him give the composition a kinetic, almost violent energy that feels very much at home in 2014.
