The Savage She-Hulk #8

This September 1980 issue of The Savage She-Hulk features a striking Michael Golden cover that puts Jennifer Walters' jade alter ego in a genuinely dire situation — crouched low among scattered skulls and bones while a massive, red-eyed clay-like creature looms enormous behind her, its gnarled hands reaching from both sides as if ready to engulf her entirely. She-Hulk's defiant expression, echoed in the inset portrait at the upper left, makes clear she's not going down without a fight. With David Anthony Kraft writing and the art team of Mike Vosburg, Chic Stone, Robby Carosella, and Peter Kirch bringing "Among the Ogres!" to life inside, this is early Marvel monster-meets-superhero storytelling at its most visceral.
