The Phantom #2
In "Wild Animals of Africa, Number 1: The Crocodile," the Phantom investigates the theft of the Llongo crown, leading him to a hidden society of tiny people who've maintained a centuries-old treaty with his ancestor—protection in exchange for secrecy and annual tribute in the form of rattles left on the Skull Throne. Written by Bill Harris and illustrated by Bill Lignante, with lettering by Ben Oda, this 1963 Western Comics tale blends adventure and folklore, culminating in a tense showdown with a deadly crocodile that seals the agreement. The cover, by George Wilson, captures the moment with dramatic flair.
In "The Rattle," the Phantom investigates a theft at the Llongo chief’s village, uncovering a secret alliance with the Little People—tiny guardians who once made a pact with his ancestor. The annual appearance of rattles on the Skull Throne is no coincidence, but a sacred token of that vow, one the Phantom must now uphold.
When a failing airplane forces young Jack Forest to bail out and cling to a jungle tree, he's suddenly face-to-face with a hungry tiger. Just as the danger reaches its peak, Victor King and Francis Queen arrive on the scene, their quick reflexes saving Jack with a precise shot.
In "The Test," the Phantom finds himself unexpectedly chosen by space aliens as the subject of a bizarre trial by combat—meant to gauge Earth's worthiness for invasion. Though caught off guard, the Ghost Who Walks proves more than a match for his otherworldly challengers, leaving them with no choice but to reconsider their plans.
