“Siege”
★ 1st appearance — Sharon Friedlander★ 1st appearance — Tom Corsi

In "Siege," Danielle Moonstar battles for survival in a hospital, while Warlock and Magus race toward Earth aboard the Starjammers—unaware of the danger they carry. As Magik begins to summon her armor and the Demon Bear strikes again, the New Mutants and two captured allies are ripped from their world and thrust into a nightmarish dimension. Written by Chris Claremont and illustrated with stunning intensity by Bill Sienkiewicz—whose dynamic art defines the issue's look—this pivotal moment in the series blends visceral tension with escalating cosmic stakes, all wrapped in a cover by Sienkiewicz that captures the chaos in bold, haunting strokes.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Issue #19 is Part 2 of the three-part 'Demon Bear Saga' (New Mutants #18–20), written by Chris Claremont with full art (pencils and inks) by Bill Sienkiewicz.
  • The first appearance of Illyana Rasputin's eldritch/sorceress armor occurs in this issue, when the Demon Bear claws her arm and shining silver armor manifests in its place — a recurring visual element that would grow more elaborate (and more demonic-looking) the closer Illyana came to her dark side throughout the rest of the series.
  • Tom Corsi (a Westchester County police officer) and Sharon Friedlander (a nurse at the hospital where Dani is in surgery) make their first appearances; both are later corrupted and transformed by the Demon Bear and become long-running supporting characters in New Mutants and the X-Men.
  • The story advances a subplot involving the techno-organic alien Warlock and his pursuing father Magus, who are detected flying past the Starjammers toward Earth — Claremont's advance-seeding of a storyline that would pay off in issue #21.
  • The titled story, 'Siege,' follows the New Mutants defending a critically injured Dani Moonstar in surgery at a hospital; by the issue's end, the Demon Bear teleports the entire team — and the two new characters — to its own extradimensional realm called the Badlands.
  • The creative team also includes colorist Glynis Wein (also credited as Glynis Oliver), letterer Tom Orzechowski, editor Ann Nocenti, assistant editor Peter Sanderson, and editor-in-chief Jim Shooter.
  • The issue has been reprinted in more than thirteen collected editions across multiple decades and countries, including New Mutants Classic Vol. 3 (2006), the standalone New Mutants: The Demon Bear Saga TPB (1990), New Mutants / X-Force: Demon Bear (2014), New Mutants: Demon Bear (2018), New Mutants Epic Collection Vol. 2: The Demon Bear Saga (2019), and New Mutants Omnibus Vol. 1 (2020).
  • The Demon Bear Saga — and this issue's cover and interior pages — has been cited as a showcase for colorist Glynis Wein's contributions, with critics noting that her colors were integral to the arc's visual atmosphere, not merely supplementary to Sienkiewicz's linework.
