September 1972 brings one of Jack Kirby and Mike Royer's most visually arresting covers: Orion lunges forward in his red battle suit, fist outstretched, while swarming insect soldiers — the Mantis hordes — overrun a cityscape behind him. A helmeted warrior crouches in the foreground as the cover promises "Earth… the Doomed Dominion," setting the stage for a full-scale alien invasion that puts our entire planet at stake. Part of Kirby's ambitious Fourth World saga, this issue captures the epic scale and cosmic energy that made New Gods such a bold creative statement for DC in the early 1970s.
