“To Slay a Superboy!”

Something has gone terribly wrong for the Boy of Steel in The New Adventures of Superboy #53 (1984). The cover — penciled by Kurt Schaffenberger and inked by Murphy Anderson — shows a wide-eyed Superboy reeling in shock as a blazing meteor passes clean through his body, its fiery streak plunging toward the rooftops of Smallville below while his own caption balloon reads "Great Krypton! It went right through me…as if I…didn't…exist!" It's a genuinely unsettling image that raises an immediate question: what could possibly rob the Kryptonian powerhouse of his very physical presence, and can he stop that meteor before it levels the town?
