About this Issue

The Mighty Avengers #27 is the first appearance of the Unspoken, a deposed Inhuman king so dangerous that his own people erased him from their entire recorded history — a genuinely novel character concept folded into the existing mythology of Black Bolt's rise to the throne. The issue simultaneously marks the first appearance of the People's Defense Force, China's government-sanctioned super-team, introducing several entirely new characters to the Marvel Universe in a single stroke. It also debuts the Infinite Avengers Mansion as an operational headquarters, a key location for the Hank Pym era of the title and for subsequent stories in Avengers Academy. By threading together the Dark Reign and War of Kings event tapestries through an original villain rather than a recycled one, the issue expands the Inhuman corner of the Marvel Universe in a direction that later writers — including the 2017 Inhumans: Once and Future Kings miniseries — would revisit and build upon.

History

The issue was written by the regular series team of Dan Slott and co-writer Christos N. Gage, with interior art by Khoi Pham and a cover by Marko Djurdjevic. It was released on July 15, 2009, bearing a September 2009 cover date, during Marvel's Dark Reign editorial period when Norman Osborn controlled the officially sanctioned Avengers franchise and Hank Pym's team operated outside H.A.M.M.E.R.'s jurisdiction. Slott and Gage used the arc to plant the Unspoken as a threat whose backstory retroactively complicated the established Inhuman succession narrative, though at least one close-reading fan site noted that the Unspoken's history does not align perfectly with other previously published accounts of Black Bolt's ascension. The issue also included a 7-page preview of Jonathan Hickman and Dale Eaglesham's Fantastic Four #570, a common promotional insert of the era.
