“Crushed by the Iron Cross!”

The Invaders face a grim situation on this January 1979 Marvel cover, where Namor the Sub-Mariner takes a punishing energy blast from the armored Iron Cross while Captain America and the Human Torch look on with alarm — the cover's dialogue making it brutally clear that reaching Namor underwater may be beyond even his teammates' reach. Alan Kupperberg's pencils, inked by Joe Sinnott, frame the action with real urgency, staging the clash atop what appears to be a Nazi submarine. Roy Thomas's WWII super-team formula is in full force here, pitting Marvel's greatest wartime heroes against a formidable Axis threat with plenty of dramatic stakes on display.
