The Incredible Hulk #2 (July 1962) is the issue that gave the world the green-skinned Hulk that has defined the character for more than six decades — a design change so foundational that every subsequent comic, animated series, live-action television show, and film rests on it. As only the second appearance of Bruce Banner's alter ego, the issue also introduces the Toad Men (the Tribbitites), the first alien race to threaten Earth in the Hulk's own title, deepening the early Marvel Universe's commitment to science-fiction stakes. It further advances the quietly tragic core of the series — Banner furiously trying to contain the monster within himself while being hunted by General Ross — a tension that would power decades of storytelling. Written by Stan Lee and plotted and penciled by Jack Kirby, the issue added Steve Ditko as inker — a pairing that gave Hulk a noticeably darker, more shadowy texture compared to the cleaner lines of the first issue. The color shift from gray to green was a production-driven editorial decision: the gray ink used in issue #1 had printed inconsistently and proved difficult to reproduce reliably on the presses of the era, so Stan Lee chose to redesign the character's skin color, with green selected in part because Marvel had no other green-costumed hero in its lineup at the time. The original series was already on uncertain commercial ground — it would be cancelled after only six issues — and the rapid retooling of the Hulk's appearance in issue #2 reflects the frantic, issue-by-issue experimentation that characterized the early Lee-Kirby collaborations. Colorist Stan Goldberg and letterer Art Simek rounded out the production team.
