Rita is serving as a teacher in Appalachia on a volunteer basis. When she gives advice to young Sally Ann, her ignorance of the girl's poverty starts her off on the wrong foot with the girl's widower father, Ray Whitley. Rita has difficultly making friends in the hills, but her perseverance wins over Sally Ann and Ray. When Ray's new fruit strains enable him to double his farming income, he proposes to Rita.
