Written by Mark Waid with art by various creators, the storyline explores the nature of the Speed Force and tests the limits of the Flash's powers. It collects issues from The Flash, Impulse, and Speed Force series from the late 1990s.
In "Dead Heat, First Lap: Flatfooted," Bart Allen faces a day without his usual super-speed, testing his limits in ways he’s never known. As Jay, Linda, Jenni, and Iris visit Max in the hospital, a sudden attack by Savitar’s ninjas forces Max to tap into the Speed Force and pass his power to Johnny—just before a surge across the Speed Force brings Impulse rushing in to save the day. Written by Mark Waid and brought to life with dynamic art by Humberto Ramos, inks by Wayne Faucher, colors by Tom McCraw, and letters by Chris Eliopoulos, this 2000 issue features a cover by Oscar Jimenez and José Marzán Jr. that captures the intensity of the moment.
