“A Very Wrong Turn!”

The cover tagline says it all — "The Weirdest Adventure Ever" — as the Defenders find themselves in a thoroughly bizarre landscape populated by talking trees with "HERE" and "THERE" signs, a grinning winged demon, a colorful toucan-like bird, giant mushrooms, and a cheerful caterpillar. Namor and a sword-wielding blonde warrior charge forward while a large blue creature crouches in the foreground, the whole scene brimming with the kind of delightful strangeness that made Marvel's "non-team" so endearing in 1983. Cover pencils by Don Perlin and inks by Steve Mitchell give the absurdist setting a lively, energetic feel that makes this J. M. DeMatteis–scripted issue genuinely hard to put back on the shelf.
