“The Island of Misfit Souls”

Issue four of this six-part DC miniseries drops the Creeper into exactly the kind of unsettling urban nightmare the character was made for. The cover — penciled and inked by Justiniano — shows the wild-haired, feral Creeper crouching on the ledge of a Gothic stone tower, his trademark red fringe billowing dramatically behind him, while a massive gargoyle-like creature looms over him from above, teeth bared and claws spread across the stonework. It's a tense, beautifully rendered standoff that captures the series' promise to drag readers into something genuinely strange and gothic.
