The Complete Carl Barks Disney Library #4
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeThis volume collects Carl Barks' classic Donald Duck stories from the 1940s and 1950s, including the title adventure 'Maharajah Donald' and other tales featuring the Ducks in exotic locales and comedic misadventures. Part of Fantagraphics' comprehensive series restoring Barks' original artwork and colors, it showcases the master storyteller's signature blend of humor, adventure, and detailed cartooning that defined Disney comics for generations.
In "Maharajah Donald," Carl Barks crafts a delightfully absurd adventure as Huey, Dewey, and Louie’s humble pencil stub spirals into a cross-continental journey to India—only for Donald to hijack the ticket, forcing the nephews to stow away. Cover by Carl Barks, this 2023 Fantagraphics release showcases Barks’ masterful storytelling and artistry, with Gary Leach’s colors adding warmth to the tale of a sacred elephant, a royal favor, and a river crossing that might just be more complicated than it seems.

Starting with a mere pencil stub, and through an unlikely series of events, Huey, Dewey, and Louie trade-up to a steamship ticket to India, which Donald gloms for himself forcing the boys to stow away on the very same ship. Aboard ship and facing consequences for unknowingly harboring his stowaway nephews, Donald meets the wealthy Maharajah of Hoopadoola, who offers to resolve the Ducks' matters with the steamship line for a favor in return. The favor? Riding an old, gentle, sacred elephant across a narrow river to a neighboring kingdom. What possible harm could there be in such a gesture?
