“Family Matters”

In "Family Matters," The Comet #2 (1983), writer Bill DuBay and artist Carmine Infantino delve into the emotional core of a fractured family, as John confronts the painful legacy of Bob Dickering’s past. When Bob’s health fails, the truth about his abusive actions toward Steve surfaces, revealing a cycle of violence that reaches into Steve’s own childhood. With the Hangman’s costume once again a symbol of both guilt and redemption, John must step into its shadow to confront a mother’s hidden cruelty—before it’s too late. Cover by Carmine Infantino and Alex Niño captures the weight of this moment in stark, expressive detail.

Thelma contacts John as Bob is closer to death. The Comet reveals more of his origins and Bob confesses that he abused Steve in order to make him stronger. Steve learns that Timmy was beaten by his mother and not a street gang. Steve hurries to stop any more abuse, but is arrested after he batters her door down. Wanting to show how much he really loves his son, Bob once again dons the Hangman's costume, but is too weak to be of help. John brings him back to the hospital, and wears the Hangman costume in order to help Steve and get Mrs. Carpenter to confess her abuse. Bob Dickering passes away.
