“The Night Batman Sold His Soul!”

Two of DC's most compelling tough guys — Batman and Sgt. Rock — share an unlikely team-up in this 1973 issue of The Brave and the Bold, titled "The Night Batman Sold His Soul!" Jim Aparo's cover crackles with urgency: Batman charges forward brandishing a glowing golden cross while a grimacing Sgt. Rock levels his rifle at it, bullets flying, as a mysterious cloaked figure looms in the shadows behind them alongside what appears to be a Nazi-emblazoned cannon. Batman's desperate plea — "Stop, Rock! This is the only thing that can destroy him!" — makes the cover impossible to put down without wanting to know exactly what darkness these two are up against.
