Roy Thomas was in the middle of a productive run shepherding the Avengers into the early Bronze Age when issue #75 was produced, with John Buscema having recently returned to penciling duties on the title alongside new inker Tom Palmer — a creative pairing that quickly became the definitive artistic voice of the book in this period. Thomas later recalled in interview that the concept for Arkon was to blend the feel of Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter of Mars with Robert E. Howard's Conan, resulting in a villain who was simultaneously a desperate planetary ruler and a barbaric conqueror. Buscema's visual interpretation gave Arkon a towering, armored physicality that suited the sword-and-sorcery genre while keeping him legible as a credible threat to a team of superheroes.
