“The Living Laser!”
About this Issue

Avengers #34 is the debut issue of the Living Laser (Arthur Parks), a Silver Age villain conceived around the then-cutting-edge science of laser technology who would go on to become a recurring antagonist of Iron Man and a fixture of Marvel's villain roster for decades. The issue also marks a quiet but significant milestone as the final Avengers script written by Stan Lee before Roy Thomas took over the title, closing a foundational chapter in the book's history. Bill Foster — the scientist who would eventually become Black Goliath and one of Marvel's earliest prominent Black super-heroes — continues his supporting role here, deepening his narrative thread begun just two issues prior. Additionally, this issue establishes the 'aero-car' as the Avengers' settled team transport, a conceptual forerunner to the quinjet that would become central to Avengers mythology.

In "The Living Laser!", the Avengers find themselves in a high-stakes standoff when the villainous Living Laser sets his sights on Janet Van Dyne, the Wasp, whose unique abilities make her a prized target. Written by Stan Lee and brought to life with dynamic art by Don Heck—both on the interior and cover—this 1966 issue blends classic superhero tension with the era’s distinctive flair, all wrapped in the vibrant colors of Stan Goldberg.

History

The issue was written by Stan Lee, drawn and covered by Don Heck, and lettered by Artie Simek, with a cover date of November 1966 and an on-sale date of September 8, 1966, per Library of Congress periodicals records. It was edited by Stan Lee under publisher Martin Goodman. The story opens a two-part arc concluded in Avengers #35, and Lee's editorial note in the issue itself acknowledged that a promised transformation for Goliath — teased the prior issue — was being held back until #35, framing #34 explicitly as a build-up chapter. Lee's departure from scripting duties after this issue handed the series to Roy Thomas, who co-plotted the conclusion.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First appearance of the Living Laser (Arthur Parks), a physicist who builds wrist-mounted laser projectors and turns to crime after personal rejection, created by Stan Lee and Don Heck.
  • The Living Laser's backstory centers on his obsession with the Wasp after a chance encounter; his ex-girlfriend Lucy Barton is a friend of Janet Van Dyne's, tying the villain's origin to the Avengers' personal world.
  • This is the final Avengers issue scripted by Stan Lee; Roy Thomas took over writing duties beginning with the concluding chapter in issue #35.
  • Dr. Bill Foster — who would later become Black Goliath, one of Marvel's earliest Black super-heroes to headline his own title — appears in a cameo, continuing the supporting role he debuted in Avengers #32.
  • Black Widow (Natasha Romanoff) and Lucy Barton are referenced or depicted only in text/illustrations, not as active participants in the main story; the active Avengers lineup is Captain America, Goliath, Hawkeye, and the Wasp.
  • The issue is the first to consistently name the Avengers' aerial transport the 'aero-car,' a designation that would evolve into the quinjet concept in later years.
  • A noted continuity wrinkle: Captain America states his shield has been coated with a laser-proof compound designed by Tony Stark — a detail later contradicted by the revelation that the shield is composed of indestructible adamantium/vibranium alloy.
  • The story has been reprinted in Marvel Triple Action #26 (November 1975), Essential Avengers Vol. 2 (1998, black and white), Marvel Masterworks: The Avengers Vol. 4 (2012), and The Avengers Omnibus Vol. 2 (2015 and 2023 Second Edition).
