About this Issue

Avengers #15 closes the original Baron Heinrich Zemo arc with one of Silver Age Marvel's most dramatically satisfying villain deaths: Zemo's own reflected laser blast triggers the Amazon avalanche that buries him, resolving the blood feud with Captain America that had been simmering since the character's retroactive introduction in Avengers #4. The issue represents the decisive, violent end of the first Masters of Evil lineup assembled by Zemo, and the narrative weight of that conclusion — Heinrich staying dead in an era when most villains returned — seeded decades of storytelling, compelling his son Helmut to eventually take up the Baron Zemo mantle. It is also a notable production moment in the early Avengers run: Jack Kirby's return to layouts after the book had operated primarily as a Lee–Heck production lifted the storytelling quality noticeably, marking these two issues as among the strongest of the original run.

In "Now, by My Hand, Shall Die a Villain!", the Avengers clash with the Masters of Evil in the heart of New York, even as Captain America races to rescue Rick Jones from the clutches of Zemo in a remote jungle lair. With Jack Kirby’s dynamic art and Stan Lee’s gripping storytelling, this landmark 1965 issue delivers a powerful showdown that finally brings closure to a long-standing tragedy, all rendered in bold colors by Stan Goldberg and striking cover art by Kirby and Chic Stone.

History

The issue went on sale February 11, 1965, with a cover date of April 1965. Stan Lee scripted the story — titled 'Now, By My Hand, Shall Die a Villain!' — over layouts by Jack Kirby, with Don Heck handling finished pencils and Mike Esposito providing inks under the house pseudonym 'Mickey Demeo,' a pen name he used routinely during this period at Marvel. The cover was penciled by Kirby and inked by Chic Stone. Collector and fan commentary from the era notes that Kirby had largely stepped back from the title, which suffered creatively as a result; his return to provide layouts for this issue and the following one gave the storytelling a noticeably stronger visual structure.
