About this Issue

Amazing Spider-Man Annual #9 is Marvel's effort to give the widest possible readership access to a story that had suddenly become essential backstory: the 1968 Spectacular Spider-Man Magazine #2 tale 'The Goblin Lives!', which depicted Norman Osborn reclaiming his Green Goblin persona and learning Peter Parker's secret identity. When Amazing Spider-Man #121–122 (June–July 1973) killed both Gwen Stacy and the Goblin himself, the demand for that earlier confrontation spiked sharply, and the Annual answered it by putting the story into the standard newsstand format where most readers could actually find and afford it. Beyond the main feature, the annual also packaged the first color-comic reprints of the Kingpin's debut (originally Amazing Spider-Man #50, 1967) and the Shocker's debut (originally Amazing Spider-Man #46, 1967), making it a tidy time-capsule of the Lee-Romita era's most durable villains arriving on the scene simultaneously.

History

The source material, 'The Goblin Lives!', was originally written by Stan Lee and drawn by John Romita Sr. (layouts/pencils) and Jim Mooney (pencils/inks) for Spectacular Spider-Man Magazine #2 (November 1968), a short-lived Marvel experiment in the black-and-white magazine format. The magazine version ran 58 pages, far too long for the annual format, so 18 pages were trimmed to produce the 40-page condensed version that appears here; Romita also redrew the cover in color from his original painted magazine artwork. The reprint was greenlit under editor-in-chief Roy Thomas, almost certainly timed to the enormous reader interest generated by the Goblin's death and Gwen Stacy's murder in the monthly title just weeks before this annual's on-sale date.
