Writer-editor Stan Lee and artist/co-plotter Steve Ditko produced the issue at the height of their collaborative run on the title, which lasted 38 issues from March 1963 through July 1966. The annual format gave Lee and Ditko room to stage a story far larger than a standard issue could hold — the main 'Sinister Six!' feature runs 41 pages — and the extra page count allowed for an ambitious set of backup features that no regular monthly could accommodate. The issue arrived as Marvel's annuals were establishing themselves as must-buy events, offering readers outsized content at a higher cover price of 25 cents at a time when regular issues cost 12 cents. All of the backup content — the villain gallery, the 'Secrets of Spider-Man' feature, and the behind-the-scenes 'How Stan Lee and Steve Ditko Create Spider-Man!' piece — was drawn by Ditko, reflecting just how central his contribution was to building Spider-Man's world during this period.
