The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1
The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1 is the debut of the Sinister Six — Doctor Octopus, Electro, Kraven the Hunter, Mysterio, Sandman, and the Vulture joining forces — which became the defining template for organized supervillain teamups in the Spider-Man corner of the Marvel Universe and one of the most enduring villain factions in comics history. The concept of rallying every major rogue from a single hero's gallery into a coordinated gauntlet had not been executed at this scale before in mainstream superhero comics, and the issue's structure — six splash-page set-pieces, each villain in a tailored arena — influenced how writers would choreograph villain ensembles for decades. Beyond the Sinister Six, the issue's extensive backup material made it a comprehensive encyclopedia of Spider-Man's world through his first two years, functioning as both a celebration and a primer for the character's already-rich mythology. The team itself returned again and again across comics, animation, video games, and film, making this annual's narrative skeleton one of the most-revisited blueprints in Marvel's history.
In *The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1* (1964), Dr. Octopus assembles the Sinister Six—a team of Spider-Man’s most notorious foes—marking their first team-up in a story written by Stan Lee and illustrated by Steve Ditko. With Betty Brant and Aunt May taken hostage, Spider-Man must face off against this dangerous coalition in a high-stakes battle that pushes him to his limits. The cover, also by Steve Ditko, captures the menacing lineup in sharp, iconic detail.

Writer-editor Stan Lee and artist/co-plotter Steve Ditko produced the issue at the height of their collaborative run on the title, which lasted 38 issues from March 1963 through July 1966. The annual format gave Lee and Ditko room to stage a story far larger than a standard issue could hold — the main 'Sinister Six!' feature runs 41 pages — and the extra page count allowed for an ambitious set of backup features that no regular monthly could accommodate. The issue arrived as Marvel's annuals were establishing themselves as must-buy events, offering readers outsized content at a higher cover price of 25 cents at a time when regular issues cost 12 cents. All of the backup content — the villain gallery, the 'Secrets of Spider-Man' feature, and the behind-the-scenes 'How Stan Lee and Steve Ditko Create Spider-Man!' piece — was drawn by Ditko, reflecting just how central his contribution was to building Spider-Man's world during this period.
