This October 1963 Charlton romance issue leads with "Sound of Empty Dreams," and Dick Giordano's cover delivers every drop of bittersweet heartache the title promises. A young woman with red hair dabs tears from her cheek as she watches a couple nearly kissing in the foreground, while a trumpet player performs in the background — the cover text tying it all together: "sometimes when I hear the wail of a soulful trumpet, I think of Dan and my heart breaks to the… Sound of Empty Dreams." With writing by Joe Gill and inks by Vince Colletta inside, this is a nicely crafted slice of early-'60s teen romance that wears its emotions right on its sleeve.
