“Fiance, First Class”

In "Fiance, First Class," English teacher Marion finds her romance with chemistry teacher David strained by jealousy over his attention to student Joan, a bright but struggling girl working on a scholarship-winning experiment. When Marion tries to sabotage Joan’s chances by giving her a failing grade, David confronts her, calling out her twisted perceptions—only to later reveal a surprising turn when Joan earns the scholarship and David offers Marion a new role: as his wife. Art by Sy Moskowitz brings emotional depth to this 1956 tale, while the cover by Dick Giordano and Jon D'Agostino captures the story’s bittersweet tension.

English teacher Marion loves chemistry teacher David, but she is jealous of his praise for student Joan. David is helping Joan with an experiment that will earn her a scholarship, and Marion decides to give Joan a failing grade on a paper to ruin her chances. David tells Marion that her “warped mind twisted [his] interest in Joan,” who comes from a poor family and needs the scholarship. He breaks up with her. Marion confesses to the school board and resigns. Joan gets the scholarship and David says he has a new job for Marion: as his wife.
