Swamp Thing #81
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeIn "Widowsweed," Abby and Chester grapple with the absence of the Swamp Thing, their worry deepening when they encounter a mysterious alien known as Widowsweed—sent to eliminate Abby, who carries the potential for future Elementals. Though Widowsweed is conflicted by the revelation of Abby’s pregnancy and ultimately chooses not to harm her, her moment of mercy ends abruptly when Guy Gardner arrives, unaware of the truth, and kills her in a moment of instinct. Rick Veitch’s writing and art bring a haunting, grounded intensity to the story, while Tatjana Wood’s colors and John Costanza’s lettering enhance the mood. The cover, also by Veitch, captures the eerie stillness of the encounter.

Abby and Chester are concerned about the missing Swamp Thing but she won't believe that he's dead. They encounter Widowsweed, an alien sent on a mission from the larger invasion force to capture or kill Abby because she is pregnant with possible future Elementals. Widowsweed did not know of the pregnancy beforehand, and as a mother herself she refuses to harm Abby and leaves. At that moment Guy Gardner, sent to retrieve the Swamp Thing to help against the invasion, arrives and unthinkingly kills the departing Widowsweed. Learning that Swamp Thing is missing, Gardner leaves without apology.
