The issue was written by Otto Binder and penciled by Curt Swan, the creative team who defined the early run of the series; Swan had been the title's primary penciler since its 1954 launch, a relationship he later described as his introduction to the Superman Family. Whitney Ellsworth served as editor on the book at this time. The gorilla cover — with Jimmy-in-ape-form seated at a newsroom typewriter — was itself part of a conscious Weisinger-era editorial tactic: sales data had shown that gorilla covers reliably moved more copies, and this issue is one of the clearest examples of that strategy being baked directly into the story rather than just the cover image.
