Superman Adventures #46

A ragged, bearded Superman trudges wearily toward an "Entering Smallville" sign, his costume torn and a chain wrapped around his fist — while a Smallville Sheriff's deputy points emphatically back the way he came, making the cover's bold tagline "And Stay Out, Superman!" feel all too real. The animated-series style artwork by cover penciler Mike Manley and inker Terry Austin gives the scene a striking warmth even as it delivers a surprisingly downbeat image of the Man of Steel at a clear low point. Interior story "The Fallen," written by S. C. Bury with art by Neil Vokes, promises to dig into whatever brought Superman to this humbling moment on the outskirts of his hometown.
