“Achilles Versus Superman!”

This 1950 Superman issue packs 52 big pages into a single dime, and Al Plastino's cover sets an immediately playful tone: Superman perches on a rooftop ledge, paintbrush in hand, apparently adding finishing touches to a giant billboard advertising the "Miss Metropolis of 1950" contest — complete with a glamorous blonde in a swimsuit, a beach ball, and the bold come-on "Girls! Girls! Girls! How Dangerous Is Your Job?" It's a wonderfully offbeat image that hints at the mix of humor and adventure DC was delivering to readers that year, all wrapped up in the story "Achilles Versus Superman!" by writer Bill Finger and artist/inker Al Plastino.
