Supergirl #42
Peter David's run on Supergirl delivers a genuinely unsettling tone with issue #42, and the cover by Leonard Kirk and Robin Riggs sets it perfectly. Supergirl — in her civilian clothes bearing the "S" symbol — recoils in wide-eyed horror as she answers her door to find a looming, shadowy figure clutching a bouquet of flowers, the blossoms already looking crushed and ominous against the darkness. The title "Flowers for Supergirl" hanging above the scene gives the whole image a chilling, off-kilter romance-gone-wrong feeling that makes this March 2000 issue hard to put back on the shelf.
