Supergirl #22
This 2013 New 52 entry delivers a genuinely striking cover by Mahmud Asrar: Supergirl's face is split dramatically down the middle, one half her familiar blonde, blue-eyed self and the other a dark mechanical silhouette tangled in cables and machinery, with the bold declaration "Synthesis… Complete!" looming beside her. The stark red background makes that half-human, half-machine image hit hard, hinting at a Kara caught between two very different identities. Writer Michael Alan Nelson joins artists Diógenes Neves and Marc Deering for "Close to Home," and the cover alone makes a compelling case that this issue puts Supergirl through something genuinely unsettling.
