Stumptown #2
This second volume of Greg Rucka's Stumptown series collects the story arc 'The Case of the Baby in the Velvet Case,' following Portland private investigator Dex Parios as she takes on a missing-person case that leads her into a tangled web of music, family secrets, and danger. Illustrated by Justin Greenwood, the trade paperback edition reprints issues #1–5 of the 2018 series from Oni Press.
In "The Case of the Baby in the Velvet Case," Dex and his reluctant partner Mim are pulled into a wild chase after a scuffle with skinheads, leading to a tense high-speed pursuit that ends in a dramatic standoff. Written by Greg Rucka and illustrated by Matthew Southworth—with coloring by Rico Renzi and Southworth—this issue blends sharp pacing with the gritty atmosphere of Stumptown’s world, all framed by Southworth’s striking cover.
In "The Case of the Baby in the Velvet Case," Dex is hired by Miriam Bracca of the band Tailhook to track down her stolen guitar, leading her into a tense encounter with a roadie under attack by two skinheads. When she intervenes, the situation escalates—only to be interrupted by a D.E.A. agent, Cathy Chase, who points a gun at her, turning the investigation into something far more dangerous than a simple theft.
In "The Case of the Baby in the Velvet Case, Part Two," Dex follows a trail that links a band’s tour to a drug smuggling operation, uncovering secrets hidden in plain sight. When her suspicions lead her to confront Miriam, the band’s manager, the truth proves more tangled than she expected—especially after a mysterious delivery arrives at her doorstep.
In "The Case of the Baby in the Velvet Case, Part Three," Dex follows a trail from a mysterious guitar case to a tense showdown at Mum’s office, where the stakes rise when skinheads ambush her. With the D.E.A. hinting at hidden evidence and the case itself holding more secrets than she first thought, Dex must stay one step ahead—before someone else takes the guitar for good.
In "The Case of the Baby in the Velvet Case, Part Four," Dex and Mim find themselves in the middle of a wild chase after a scuffle with skinheads, leading to a high-speed pursuit that ends with a cop shot and both cars seized. With the skinheads now on the move in a stolen squad car, Dex and Mim must stay one step ahead—until the net closes around them all.
In "The Case of the Baby in the Velvet Case," Dex digs deeper into the mystery of Mim’s stolen guitar, uncovering a trail that leads beyond the obvious suspects. With the skinheads in custody and the drugs gone, Dex pieces together who truly took the guitar—and who sent the skinheads after it—revealing a twist that surprises even the band’s lawyers.
