“Gorgolla! The Living Gargoyle!!”

In "Gorgolla! The Living Gargoyle!!" from Strange Tales #74 (1960), a student’s research trip to a hidden Tibetan valley leads him into a colossal stone cavern, where he encounters Gorgolla—a towering, ancient gargoyle from another world. Written by Stan Lee and Larry Lieber and brought to life by Jack Kirby’s dynamic art and Dick Ayers’ bold inks, the story unfolds with a twist: Gorgolla’s long-awaited invasion is thwarted not by humans, but by his own minions, who have chosen to defend humanity instead. The cover by Jack Kirby and Dick Ayers captures the moment’s eerie grandeur, making this a standout early Marvel tale.

While researching the origin of gargoyles for a class project, a student travels to a hidden valley in Tibet where he enters a huge stone cavern and meets Gorgolla (a gigantic stone gargoyle). Gorgolla explains that he and his army came to Earth from another world and have waited for centuries to strike and conquer humanity. He sends the signal, but is shocked when the gargoyles (his minions) come to Tibet and destroy him. The gargoyles explain they have become enamored by humanity and want to protect us, not conquer us.
