Strange Fruit #3

Apr 2016 · Boom! Studios · 3.99 USD

In Strange Fruit #3, J. G. Jones and Mark Waid deliver a harrowing chapter where Jim’s forced labor on the levee deepens the divide between white and Black workers, while Mr. McCoy’s cryptic use of mathematics hints at a hidden language of resistance. As Sonny risks everything to save the missing child James, the fragile tension explodes—culminating in a brutal act of violence that shatters the Klan’s ranks and triggers chaos as the levee finally gives way. The issue’s stark, haunting visuals by J. G. Jones and bold storytelling make it a pivotal moment in the series, with cover art by Jones capturing the story’s mounting dread.

Jim drafts more workers, white and black, onto the levee. Mr. McCoy, seeking out Johnson, establishes crude communications by means of higher mathematics. Sonny, trying to make his escape, comes across the missing child James and rescues him at the risk of his own life. But James dies as Sonny returns him to his mother. Shocking even his fellow Klan members, Pickens guns Sonny down, provoking a huge brawl, even as the levee finally breaks.
